What is a stroke?
A stroke occurs when there is an interruption in the blood supply to a part of the brain. This can be caused by a blockage in an artery supplying a part of the brain (called an infarction) or from a rupture of a blood vessel in or near the brain (called a haemorrhage). Essentially this cuts off function of a part of the brain and this is how a stroke presents. The type of stroke caused by a blockage in an artery is a far more common cause of stroke than a bleed.
